What is aeration?

aeration header

Aeration is a process that introduces more air into the soil. This is especially helpful for:

  • Reducing compaction issues from vehicles, children, pets, and lawn equipment
  • Reducing thatch
  • Reducing the risk of turf disease

To learn more about what aeration is, you can read our aeration blog on our website.

When can I expect aeration to be performed?

This will depend on when you add this service to your account. Aeration is performed during the months of May-August for Bermuda grass lawns.

Initial Route: We begin aerations in May for customers with aeration added to their account prior to May 1 of the current year. (This first pass is called our "initial route.") It may take us up to 6 weeks to complete our initial route.

  • If you add aeration to your account during the initial route, you will be inserted into the route as soon as possible but may be placed at the end of the route if we have already serviced your part of town.
  • If you add aeration after our initial route is complete, within aeration season (May-August) but , we will aerate within 10 days of adding it to your account.
  • If you add aeration outside of aeration season you will be added to the initial route to be aerated as soon as possible once aeration season begins.

Purchasing aeration as a recurring service

Aeration is priced both monthly and annually for recurring service. The tables below are for adding aeration as an annual or monthly addon to your account.

It is less expensive to purchase recurring aeration than a one-time aeration.

Also to save money, you can add aeration to your account during the off-season and avoid a first-service charge.

Purchasing aeration as a one-time service

Aeration can be purchased as a one-time service to be performed during aeration season.

The tables below describe the timeframes for one-off aeration service.

How to prepare for aeration

Aeration involves the process of driving heavy lawn care equipment on your lawn which punches thousands of holes in the ground. There are a few things you can do to ensure a successful aeration.aeration marking flag

  1. Request marking flags. We will send an e-mail with instructions and the opportunity to request marking flags prior to aeration. Marking flags can be used to mark sprinkler heads or shallow wires underground such as an underground dog fence.
  2. Water your lawn, but only like this: Don't flood or saturate your lawn. Just continue to water as normal leading up to your aeration. Hard dry soil can prevent proper aeration.
  3. Do not water your lawn the evening before or day of aeration. A freshly watered lawn will make the job messy leaving tracks and mud lying around your property.
